Tips for effective coparenting

Co-parenting may be a reality for several years for Texas parents who get a divorce. While it can be challenging due to the upheaval and the emotions involved, there are a number of things parents can do to make co-parenting less difficult for themselves and their children.

One of those things is putting the children first. This includes solving problems that arise when children have to move between two households, such as losing clothing or items for school. Parents should also set boundaries with one another about when and how often a parent communicates with the children when they are at the home of the other parent. Furthermore, parents need to communicate about whether they will attend parent-teacher conferences together as well as how they will deal with other adults that work with their children. Children may also express a preference here.

Parents need to practice self-care and set boundaries with the former spouse as well. They should also work through their emotions about the divorce. However, this may not include talking to friends and family about the situation. Although it may be painful, in some cases, it might be best to avoid these types of conversations with anyone but a therapist. Parents might also want to consider starting to date again, although they should not share the details about dating with their children.

Determining child custody can be a difficult and painful part of divorce, but parents may be happier with an outcome they decide on rather than going to court. Like a judge, parents should keep the child's best interests in mind when making this decision. For example, one parent might often be on call for work, and this could interfere with that parent's ability to be the custodial parent. Parents can still work out a visitation agreement that gives the child significant time with each of them.
