Custody issues still unresolved in Pitt, Jolie split

Texas fans of actors Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie may be aware of the pair's contentious split. Although they are now officially divorced, the two are still fighting over custody of their six children, and the issues may not be resolved quickly.

The couple was involved in a custody battle, but they were reportedly finally able to reach what appeared to be an amicable agreement in December to share custody. This was considered to be in the best interests of the children. Jolie has accused Pitt of failing to pay child support, but according to Pitt, he has paid millions for a total amount that goes well above the amount agreed upon sum. He has presented financial records to prove this.

A further complication is that the couple's three older children are reportedly resistant to spending time with Pitt. He had agreed to a temporary monitored system to prove his parenting skills. The older children are all adopted and are all in their teens. One or more of the children may be 18 or older by the time custody matters are finally settled. This case may demonstrate the importance of allowing children input into custody decisions, particularly older children.

A number of other factors go into determining child custody, which is known as "possession" in Texas. A court may look at how much time parents spend with their children and whether one is the main caregiver. However, the tendency is toward ensuring that a relationship can be maintained between parents and children unless the children are not safe. Parents who are concerned about the safety of their children with the other parent may want to discuss the situation and what steps to take with an attorney.
