Stevie J avoids jail time for child support debt

Texas residents who are fans of the reality television show "Love & Hip-Hop" may have followed star Stevie J's child support case. In 2016, Stevie J was warned that he could face six months behind bars for an unpaid child support debt totaling $1.3 million. The back child support was for children that Stevie J fathered with his ex-wife.

Jodie Sweetin's ex-husband asks for child support

Texas fans of actress Jodie Sweetin might be aware that she divorced her third husband, Morty Coyle, in 2016. The two have a 6-year-old daughter together, and they share physical and legal custody. At the time of their divorce, Sweetin paid Coyle $10,000 and the two split the money earned during the marriage. However, Coyle has filed for child support from Sweetin. He has also asked for $5,000 for a forensic accountant and $7,500 in legal fees.

Changes to child support rules for Texas inmates

One of the potential penalties for failing to pay child support is time in jail. However, when someone is incarcerated, it is difficult or impossible for them to make the money needed to pay what they owe. Making matters worse is that child support debt often grows while someone is in jail, so it can be even harder for that person to stay out of jail for failing to meet their obligations.

Sherri Shepherd asked to pay more child support

Texas residents may have heard about the legal disputes surrounding television personality Sherri Shepherd's 2-year-old son. When Shepherd was married to her ex-husband Lamar Sally, the couple hired a surrogate to conceive a child with Sally's sperm and a donated egg. The surrogate was pregnant when Shepherd and Sally separated, and Shepherd had tried to get her name removed from the child's birth certificate.

Sherri Shepherd's family law battles

Texas television fans may have heard about the rather unique situation involving actress and past co-host of "The View" Sherri Shepherd and her former husband Lamar Sally. Shepherd wanted to void a contract making her the mother of a child created through surrogacy with Sally's sperm and a donor egg when their relationship ended. Shepherd lost her latest appeal on March 1 when the Pennsylvania Supreme Court refused to overturn a lower court's decision that she was the child's legal mother and that she must continue making child support payments.

Rocker seeks to have child support payments reduced

Music fans in Texas and around the country may know Travis Barker best as a member of the pop-rock fusion band Blink-182, but the 40-year-old drummer's hectic private life has received almost as much publicity over the years as his distinctive playing style. Barker divorced in 2006 after two years of marriage, but he became romantically involved with his former wife again in 2008 before splitting for a second time the following year.

Child support and federal income tax returns

As Texas residents consider gathering information for their tax returns, those with child support income or obligations may wonder about how this issue affects their taxes, especially if this is the first tax year for which child support has been a part of their lives. This is actually a simple issue as child support does not afford a paying parent a deduction, and there is not an obligation to report child support that has been received.

Single parents and child support in Texas

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it can cost nearly $250,000 to raise a child from birth to adulthood. In 2014, 22.1 million children under age 21 were living in households with only one parent. Of those single parents, 82.5 percent of them were mothers. While many parents rely on a combination of cash and noncash assistance, less than half actually received any sort of support.

Woman seeking $600,000 yearly in child support from Tomlinson

Texas One Direction fans may be aware that Louis Tomlinson and the mother of his newborn son are reportedly working out their living circumstances. Sources have stated that the parents, who are not a couple, have already negotiated where the mother and child will live. The next step is to decide how much child support Tomlinson will pay.
