Robin Thicke loses custody of his 6-year-old son

Texas music fans may be surprised to hear that Robin Thicke has lost custody of his 6-year-old son. The development is the latest chapter in the singer's lengthy custody battle with his ex-wife, actress Paula Patton.

On Jan. 26, the former couple appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom, where Thicke asked for temporary sole custody of his son. However, the judge denied the "Blurred Lines" singer's request and issued a restraining order forbidding him from being around his son or Patton. Earlier this year, Patton, age 41, claimed Thicke was spanking their son excessively, a claim that was backed up by a teacher and the principal of the child's school. She also expressed fears that Thicke was drinking and using drugs. Patton had previously requested for her ex-husband to have modified custody and supervised visits with their son, but that request was denied.

Thicke also made claims against Patton, claiming she was being investigated by the Department of Children and Family Services for emotional abuse. Meanwhile, Thicke's attorney claimed the DCFS told his client the case against him was being closed because the agency could not substantiate Patton's claims.

Child custody disputes can be difficult and emotional, particularly when claims of abuse are made. Parents who are involved in one may benefit by contacting a family law attorney as soon as possible. An attorney could carefully review the case and help negotiate custody and visitation agreements that are in the best interests of the child. Should a modification be required in the future, legal counsel could help file the necessary petition with the court.
