Texas pro football fans may remember former NFL receiver Robert Meachem. Over an eight-year career with the NFL, Meachem earned over $20 million. Now, the 32-year-old has been jailed for his failure to pay court-ordered child support.
Meachem began a 30-day jail sentence on Feb. 13 after a Louisiana court found that he had failed to pay child support and alimony to his ex-wife. According to reports, Meachem could be released from jail if he makes a $100,000 payment on his overdue balance. Meachem got a divorce in 2015, and he has shared custody of his two children.
A judge previously ruled that Meachem has only paid $200,000 of the $588,000 that he owes to his ex-wife. Meachem reportedly testified that he believes two people who worked for his charitable foundation took a lot of his money. He said that he did not keep track of his finances carefully enough, and he now borrows money to make ends meet. In addition to the jail sentence, Meachem was fined $500 for failing to present a witness to testify about his financial situation.
A divorced parent's financial circumstances could change significantly after the initial child support order is issued. If a parent does not petition the court for a modification of the original child support order, the parent could end up falling far behind on payments. An attorney may be able to help a parent to file a petition for a child support modification and make sure that the court has an accurate picture of both parents' financial situations.
